The Department for Transport, along with a number of other agencies and organisations, launched its Manual for Streets at the end of March. The publication, long-awaited, gives ‘guidance for practitioners involved in the planning, design, provision and approval of new residential streets, and modifications to existing ones. It aims to increase the quality of life through good design which creates more people-orientated streets’. More information about the work which produced this is available at the Manual for Streets project website.

An international project aiming to provide digital geological data for the world, One Geology has been launched under the International Year of Planet Earth. The map ’will be at a scale of 1:1,000,000, meaning it will show any feature a kilometer in size or larger, a scale that participants agreed was the most manageable to begin with, and would allow all countries of the world to participate. As this project continues, the scale will reduce to a more detailed 1:100,000, which will show features about the size of one street block.’ Putney, M. (2007) OneGeology: a site for all.
