LaTeX course in May

Imperial’s ICT dept are running a 2-day beginners course for postgraduates in LaTeX next month. No previous experience is assumed. The course costs £50.

It is a completely hands-on course and covers the following areas:.

When, why and where LaTeX?
Your first LaTeX document
Complex documents – Cross-referencing of text and maths, bibliographies, document
Styles for theses and journal articles
Resources for LaTeX on the internet

AGU e-journal collection

All Imperial staff & students now have access to practically all journal titles and all volumes & issues from the American Geophysical Union (AGU) journal collection. The only exceptions are Earth Interactions (access from 1997-2008 only) & Radio Science (access from vol. 4 onwards).

Up until now you only had access to the current content (e.g. 2002 onwards) – but you now have access to the archives. Also, you didn’t have access to any of the content from journals such as Global Biogeochemical Cycles before today – but you do now.

The titles within the AGU journal collection are listed below. The Library is in the process of updating the entries on the catalogue for all of these titles – but you can now access them here.

Nuclear engineering titles added to e-journal collection

The Library recently purchased subscriptions to these 2 e-journal titles in recognition of the increasing importance which nuclear engineering research now plays at Imperial College:

Nuclear Science and Engineering: access from 1997 (ISSN: 0029-5639)
Nuclear Technology: access from 1997 (ISSN: 0029-5450)

And we have also purchased the backfiles for these journal titles:

Annals of Nuclear Energy: coverage starts from 1975

Progress in Nuclear Energy: coverage starts from 1977

Journal of Nuclear Energy – backfile (1954-1959)

Journal of Nuclear Energy. Part A – backfile (1959-1961)

Journal of Nuclear Energy. Parts A/B – backfile (1961-1966)

All of these e-journals are available via the library website.

Spring issue of Impact now available

Potential delays to document delivery services at the British Library

Traces of asbestos have been found in storage buildings at the British Library in Boston Spa. This means some areas will be closed temporarily and certain services may be unavailable.

Work has started on the removal of the asbestos and will continue through 2011. Up to 30% of document delivery material may be affected.

However the British Library is prioritising universities such as Imperial College for any document delivery requests they receive. The Library will of course be looking for other locations to fulfil document delivery requests if delays occur.

New ProQuest Dissertation & Theses database

You now have access to 2 separate ProQuest Dissertation & Theses (PQDT) databases. One covers UK & Irish material only – and the other covers US & International material. Both databases are abstract & indexing databases only i.e. no full text (unless you pay for a dissertation or thesis yourself).

The 2 databases you now have access to are:

1. ProQuest Dissertations and Theses (PQDT) A&I: covers US and international dissertations and theses. Contains citations, abstracts as well as the first 10% of the dissertation (where available in pdf).

2. ProQuest Dissertations and Theses (PQDT) – UK & Ireland: covers UK & Irish theses only. This is a new database – access began in mid-December 2010.

Both of these databases are available via the same ProQuest platform: http://proquest.umi.com/login.

Access is via IP address and we have 5 concurrent users.

Please note: the Library does not subscribe to ‘ProQuest Dissertations and Theses – Full Text (PQDT – Full Text)’.

‘Index to Theses’ service now links to 50,000 full text online theses

As from this month, Index to Theses provides links to around 50,000 full text theses. They are available as free downloads from university repositories and the EThOS site.

Around 70% of these online theses are linked via the EThoS service, a further 15% via a choice of EThOS or the university repositories covered by EThOS, and the rest via university sources. Users link from the existing Index to Theses database entry, most of which (320,000 entries) include an abstract.

Where a thesis is not yet available online, Index to Theses describes alternative routes for obtaining the full text, whether by loan or digitisation. An explanation of the linking feature can be seen at: www.theses.com/obtain.html

Index to Theses has over 550,000 entries at the start of 2011. Over 16,000 new theses are added annually.

Lyell Collection

All Imperial staff and students now have access to the complete Lyell Collection provided by the Geological Society of London. Up until now, you have only had access to a small selection of material from this collection (the journals, the Special Publications) but you now have access to everything – see the full list of available publications below.

The collection represents one of the largest integrated collections of online earth science literature available. It brings together key journals, Special Publications, and Society book series on a single electronic platform.
